The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.
