Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
