No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
