The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
