A 60-day cruise through the Land Down Under was terminated following the tragic passing of an elderly female passenger who was stranded by the ship on a distant island.

The passenger had been hiking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but separated from the party for a break. The liner sailed away leaving her and went back several hours later after the crew realised the woman was not present.

A large-scale rescue mission located her body the next day.

Authorities are investigating the incident, in coordination with law enforcement and the state coroner.

Head of the shipping company said that passengers and crew on the ship were told that the remainder of the journey had been terminated due to the "tragic passing and prior engine troubles".

Through an announcement, he mentioned that guests would be given a total repayment, and said the operator was working "to arrange the return journeys of the individuals via specially arranged planes".

Regulatory bodies also published an updated statement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Captain" banning any further travelers from getting on the ship.

The official said that they would visit the liner in the port city upon its coming back.

The ship originally sailed from the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the journey at the point of the elderly woman's demise. Lizard Island was the initial destination on the journey.

Passengers on the vessel - who typically pay tens of thousands of dollars to take part in the cruise - were taken there for a day trip with the possibility of hiking or snorkeling.

The offspring of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "stunned and saddened that the liner left the location after an organised outing without my mum".

Via her announcement, she described her parent as an "active 80-year-old" who was a affiliate of a walking group.

"Based on limited information we have been told, it seems that there was a failure of responsibility and ordinary reasoning," she stated.

She added that she wished the investigation would be able to identify what "the operator should have performed that might have saved Mother's being".

"We understand from the investigators that it was a very hot period, and mother became unwell on the hill climb," she explained.

"They requested her to head down, unescorted. Then the ship sailed away, reportedly without performing a passenger count.

"During some point in that sequence, or soon after, mum succumbed, by herself."

Operator Position

In a statement, the Head verified that the company was "working closely with authorities to aid their investigation".

He mentioned that the firm was "very regretful that this has happened" and had extended its full support to the relatives.

The ship serves up to one hundred twenty passengers with nearly fifty staff, according to corporate data. It was specially constructed to enter isolated regions of the Australian coastline and is equipped with "auxiliary vessels" - small boats used to transport passengers on day excursions.

Occurrences of this nature are rare, and cruise ships have protocols to document which individuals are embarking or leaving, according to maritime specialists.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] onboard just isn't an option," an authority stated.

Shipping companies consider these procedures extremely carefully and have "sophisticated systems in place to avoid such events from happening," the specialist added.
