Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
