Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from various fields.
